Asus wants to make a big splash in the mobile world this year, according to a Chinese-language Apple Daily report, citing company CEO Jerry Shen. While Asus shipped around 20 million smartphones in 2016, its goal for 2017 is to move 35-40 million units.

If the 40 million phones shipped best case scenario becomes reality, then Asus will effectively have doubled its sales year-on-year, which would be an amazing feat. Obviously though, 2017 is just starting and theres no way to be sure which way this will go.

The company has already unveiled a trio of handsets that should help it achieve its lofty sales goals - the AR and VR capable Zenfone AR, the Zenfone 3 Zoom with dual rear cameras, and the Pegasus 3S for the budget-conscious. Moreover, the Zenfone 4 family of devices is coming in the second quarter (so at some point between April and June), and these too ought to boost Asus profile.

On t he other hand, competitors arent going to be sitting idly by, so it will be interesting to see if Asus actually manages to reach its self-imposed sales target.
